Florence Bates (d. January 31, 1954) was an American character actress who often played grande dame characters in her films.

Born Florence Rabe in San Antonio, Texas, the second child of Jewish immigrants, Bates showed musical talent as a child, but a hand injury inhibited her from continuing her piano studies. She graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Mathematics in 1906, after which she taught school. In 1909 she met and married her first husband and gave up her career to raise their daughter. When her marriage ended in divorce, she began to study law and passed the bar in 1914, becoming at the age of 26 the first female attorney in her home state.

After the death of her parents, Bates left the legal profession to help her sister operate their father’s antique business. She became a bilingual radio commentator whose program was designed to foster good relations between the United States and Mexico. In 1929, she closed the antique shop and married wealthy oil baron William F. Jacoby. When he lost his fortune, the couple moved to Los Angeles and opened a bakery.

In the mid-1930s, Bates auditioned for and won the role of Miss Bates in a Pasadena Playhouse adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. When she decided to continue working with the theatre group, she changed her professional name to that of the first character she played on stage. In 1939 she was introduced to Alfred Hitchcock, who cast her in her first major screen role, the vain dowager Mrs. Van Hopper, in Rebecca.

Bates appeared in more than sixty films over the course of the next thirteen years. Among her credits are Kitty Foyle, The Moon and Sixpence, Mr. Lucky, Heaven Can Wait, Since You Went Away, Kismet, Saratoga Trunk, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Winter Meeting, I Remember Mama, Portrait of Jennie, A Letter to Three Wives, On the Town, and Les Misérables. Bates had a regular role on The Hank McCune Show and made guest appearances on I Love Lucy, My Little Margie, and Our Miss Brooks.

Bates died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, aged 65.

Justin Wayne Tubb (d. January 24, 1998) was an American country music singer and songwriter. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was the oldest son of legendary country singer Ernest Tubb.

By 1954 he made it on the country chart with two duets with Goldie Hill—(“Looking Back to See” and “Sure Fire Kisses”). A year later, at age 20, he was made a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Tubb had a few recordings of his own that enjoyed success, including “I Gotta Go Get My Baby” and “Take a Letter Miss Gray”, but he was more successful as a songwriter. He penned many hit songs for other performers, including “Keeping Up with the Joneses”, “Love Is No Excuse”, and “Lonesome 7-7203″, a hit for Hawkshaw Hawkins. Ultimately, six of his songs won awards. In the late 1950s he and roomed with a young, up-and-coming songwriter named Roger Miller.

During the 1960s, Tubb worked worked with his father on various business projects. Toward the end of his own life, he completed an album of duets with his father, using recordings Ernest had made before his death. The album, Just You and Me Daddy (1999), was released after Justin Tubb died in Nashville on January 24, 1998. He was survived by his widow, Carolyn McPherson Tubb.

Both of his sons (two of Ernest’s grandsons)—Cary Tubb (died November 27, 2008, survived by older son Bryce and younger son Codee) and his younger brother Zachary Tubb—became musicians. Cary performed around the U.S. and in England. Zachery has released one album.

Douglas Wayne Sahm (d. November 18, 1999), was a musician from Texas. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was a child prodigy in country music, but became a significant figure in blues, rock and other genres. Today Sahm is considered one of the most important figures in what is identified as Tejano music. He was the founder and leader of the 1960s rock and roll band The Sir Douglas Quintet, and later with Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez in The Texas Tornados, and also in Los Super Seven supergroup.

Sahm was proficient on dozens of musical instruments and was a lifelong baseball fan.

Henry Gabriel Cisneros is a politician and businessman. A Democrat, Cisneros served as the 10th Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the administration of President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1997. As HUD Secretary, Cisneros was credited with initiating the revitalization of many of the nation’s public housing developments and with formulating policies that contributed to achieving the nation’s highest ever homeownership rate. Cisneros is also a diligent advocate for the Latino community. He has and continues to serve on corporate boards, as well as chairing and serving on several non-profit boards to promote Latinos and the immigrant population, in addition to furthering the efforts for fair housing policy. Cisneros has authored, edited and collaborated on several books, and is an in-demand public speaker.

After public office, Cisneros served as President and COO for the Spanish-language network Univision from 1997-2000 before forming American City Vista to work the nation’s leading homebuilders to create homes priced within the range of average families. Holly Dunn is a country music artist who first found fame with her 1986 Top-10 hit “Daddy’s Hands” from her self-titled début album. Dunn has charted more than a dozen country singles, two of which (“Are You Ever Gonna Love Me”, “You Really Had Me Going”) reaching the #1 spot.

Dunn is the daughter of a minister father. Her brother is country music songwriter Chris Waters, with whom she has co-written much of her recorded material.

Gretchen Anne Magers is a former professional tennis player from the United States.

Magers played tennis at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, from 1983 to 1986, where she was a four-time All-American.

During her career, Magers reached the singles quarter-finals at Wimbledon, the US Open and the French Open. She won three top-level singles titles (Auckland in 1987, Schenectady in 1988, and Moscow in 1989), and reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 13. She was runner-up in the 1988 mixed doubles at Wimbledon, partnering Kelly Jones.

Michael Shawn Hickenbottom, better known by his ring name Shawn Michaels, is a former American professional wrestler. He performed for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), formerly the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), from 1988 until his retirement in 2010. He was considered one of WWE’s senior performers, having performed for over 20 years.

Hickenbottom began his wrestling career with Mid-South Wrestling, now known as Universal Wrestling Federation, and American Wrestling Association (AWA). During his time with AWA, he performed in partnership with Marty Jannetty, as The Midnight Rockers; winning the AWA World Tag Team Championship twice. Hickenbottom and Jannetty then signed with World Wrestling Federation (WWF), while in contract with AWA. They returned to AWA, only to go back to the WWF in 1988.

Hickenbottom later worked as a single performer, taking on a new persona of “The Heartbreak Kid” and, first as a villain and later as a fan favorite, moved into the main event sphere. He yielded considerable influence on booking decisions as the leader of The Kliq, a backstage group, which however fell apart in 1996. The following year, he teamed up with Hunter Hearst Hemsley, who often was referred to as Triple H (HHH), and Chyna to form D-Generation X (DX). This group of wrestlers was known for their sophomoric crude humor. That same year, Hickenbottom took part in one of the most controversial matches in wrestling history, dubbed as the “Montreal Screwjob.” After a back injury forced him to retire following his WWF Championship loss at WrestleMania XIV, Hickenbottom opened a wrestling academy, called The Shawn Michaels Wrestling Academy, in which he trained upcoming wrestlers. He made his in-ring return at SummerSlam in 2002. In 2006, Hickenbottom and Triple H briefly reformed DX, but after an injury that Triple H sustained, Hickenbottom returned to singles wrestling. Although as of 2009, the duo reunited as a tag team once more, with the two capturing the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship.

Among other accolades, Hickenbottom is a four-time world champion: a three-time WWF Champion and a former World Heavyweight Champion. He was also the winner of the 1995 and 1996 Royal Rumbles and was the company’s first Grand Slam Champion. He has also won the Slammy Award a record 10 times. Tommy Moor was replacing Pete Best for drums and the band used the name Silver Beetles. Soon after, the name of the band was changed again from Silver Beetles to The Beatles.

After that, the new Beatle music band had the first concert to welcome new member, Pete. In December 1943, Harrison was arrested by German police and sent him back to his hometown because he was too young and after him, the guys from Liverpool were also sent back to their home country.

In the year 1960, the Beatles started their concert performance again in Cavern Club in Liverpool, and this place was the beginning of their success story. They had almost 300 performances at this place and then they decided to go back to German in April 1961. At this time, one of the band members decided to leave the band to be full time artist and they became four instead of five.

Paul compulsorily had to play bass guitar as well. After that, the Beatles performed concerts in Liverpool many times until 9 November 1961, Brian, the owner of music record, came to see their concert. Brian’s customers had asked him for “Bonnie” which is the song that The Beatles had made the record in Germany few months ago.   WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON was born in Charles City County, Colony of Virginia in 1773.  He was a soldier in the U.S. Army for most of his adult life.  ROGER MUDD was born in 1928, in Washington, D.C.,   He is a television journalist and broadcaster.  Mudd’s most recent job is as primary anchor for The History Channel.  Before that he was weekend and weekday substitute anchor of CBS Evening News and also co-anchor of NBC Nightly News and hosted NBC Meet the Press.  He has received the Peabody Award, the Joan Shorenstein Award for Distinguished Washington Reporting and five Emmy Awards.

Elleai D’amore Attempts to Deny Her Famous Identity?

“Model, actress and Rock & Roll glamor girl Elleai D’Amore lands herself in hot water after a failed attempt to temporarily disassociate herself with her famous name catches up with her.” – NYLON Magazine.

In light of rumors Elleai D’Amore is making her triumphant return to the Hollywood Spotlight, a tale of her lonely and desperate attempt to make “regular” friends has emerged, shedding more insight on the down to earth star.

In an attempt to disassociate herself with her famous history, Elleai D’Amore has landed herself in some hot water with a close group of friends due to her conveniently ‘forgetful’ memory in terms of her famous notoriety.

Nineteen year old D’Amore shot to fame in late 2004 when she was booked by a string of international designers to front their various Winter, Spring and Fall lines alongside prestigiously managed top name models and catwalk queens.

After moving from Spain to the United States, Elleai begun to make a name for herself in the European and American markets as a face for major brands GUESS, Louis Vuitton and EKO despite her typically “small” height for a fashion model.

After her rave success in the fashion market, Elleai unexpectedly chose to forgo furthering her modeling career, at the dismay of her fans, suspected to be in relation to her increasing substance abuse (although these suspicions were never confirmed) and romances with “bad boy” male models and surfers.

A 5 foot 6, resident Princess of the Rock and Roll World, Elleai D’Amore, who before her successful campaigns with labels Old Navy, Louie Verdad and Calvin Klein, had only been on television once before (in the audience of MTV’s TRL the previous year) had always maintained that she wanted to “return” to the industry at some point, but never specified her direction. After finishing her final year of school, Elleai chose to ‘take some time for herself’ and focus on her plans for the future.

“Although her popularity never decreased dramatically, the spotlight was off her for long enough that the hype eventually died down, and people began to focus on celebrities that were constantly making headlines,” confirms a source. “Elleai was thankful for this opportunity to ‘disappear’, it was the break she needed.”

But for the highly recognizable Elleai, making friends and maintaining a ‘regular’ lifestyle was seemingly difficult, particularly in her localities of New York City and Los Angeles where she remained a celebrity.

Six months after her final campaign with swim wear brand TigerLily, and after a bold family move to move to Australia (to be closer to a Specialist for her Father’s health), Elleai says she attempted to form relationships with people on the basis of her newfound ‘regularity.’

“In Australia she wasn’t as popular because all of her work was based in America, Europe, South America… She wasn’t huge in Australia. A fair few people recognized her face, die hard fans of the fashion world you could call them, but making friends here without mentioning the “F” factor [fame] seemed like a possible accomplishment,” Confirms a source.

And for some time, Elleai’s plan seemed to roll out glitch free, until her personal MySpace page gained rave attention, accumulating over 1 million comments in an 8 month period from devoted fans worldwide creating suspicions among her new Australian friends as to her true identity.

Websites dedicated to “busting fakes” [MySpace account holders who are accused of identity theft after uploading another users images as their own] such as fakersbusted.com name Elleai D’Amore (alongside Kristin Cavallari, Jessica Alba, Mary-Kate Olsen and President George Bush) as one of the most faked celebrities/personalities online, particularly via the MySpace online community.

In Elleai’s case, this overwhelming statistic also worked against her as she suddenly became caught in the middle of accusations from her Australian friends that she was posing as another person after accounts begun to emerge using Elleai’s pictures, information and even similar MySpace URL’s.

“Her friends were starting to come across accounts that had pictures of her [her MySpace "fakes"] or pictures of her body with someone else’s face photoshopped on top, pictures of her face on someone else’s body, distorted pictures of herself, pictures of Elleai that had been edited so they didn’t look like the original, all kinds of weird appropriations of her pictures. Her friends became distrusting towards her and some even treated her like a black sheep, believing that whatever MySpace account they had found with an edited picture of her was possibly the ‘real’ girl from the picture [suggesting Elleai had tried to adopt the identity of someone else],” Says a friend, “It was a hard time for Elleai. She lost some people she truly cared about because they lost faith in her honesty.”

Another friends says, “…some people started to catch on, searching her name on google to see what came up and then would suddenly find themselves overwhelmed with her name appearing on Fashion Model directories, fansites dedicated to her, blogzines talking about her, pictures, biographies about her, facts, and even gossip,” says a friend, “people were starting to think, “what the hell, Elleai’s famous?” and became annoyed that she hadn’t told them about it. It set her relationships with people back a huge step, she even lost a friend because of it.”

SIX FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.

BENJAMIN OLIVER DAVIS, SR was an American general – the first African-American general in the U.S. Army.   He was born in Washington, D.C., on July 1, 1877.  He attended high school in Washington, and was in the cadet program.  He served for a short time in Company D., 1st Separate Battalion of the Washington, D.C., National Guard.  In 1898 Davis joined the 8th U.S. Volunteer Infantry Regiment of Company G.  He was with them until March 1899.  He then enlisted in the Regular Army and went to Ft. Duchesne, Utah.  Then it was on to the Philippines in August 1901, as a second lieutenant.  Upon his return to the U.S., he was assigned to the Wilberforce University in Ohio as a Professor of Military Science and Tactics for four years.  He was in the European Theater during World War II.  He had retired in 1941, at the rank of brigadier general (temporary).  The next day he was recalled to active duty with the rank of brigadier general.  Davis permanently retired in 1948, after 50 years of services to his country.  He died on November 26, 1970, in Chicago, Illinois, at age 93.

EDWARD KENNEDY “DUKE” ELLINGTON  was born on April 29, 1899, in Washington, D.C.  Ellington attended Armstrong Technical High School in Washington, D.C., and his first job was selling peanuts at the Washington Senators baseball games.  He took piano lessons, but he got more inspiration from sneaking into the poolrooms and listening to the pianists there.  He began to play in cafes and clubs around the D.C., area He is mostly recognized as one of the “greatest figures in the history of jazz.”  His career lasted about 50 years and included leading his orchestra, composing, scoring for movies and world tours.  “Due to his inventive use of the orchestra, or big band, and in part to his refined public manner and extraordinary charisma, he is generally considered to have elevated the perception of jazz to an artistic level on par with that of classical music.” (Wikipedia)
His death came at the age of 75 (1974) in New York City.

PATRICK “PAT” JOSEPH BUCHANAN  has worn many “hats” – conservative political commentator, author, syndicated columnist, politician and broadcaster.  He was senior advisor to Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan and was host of CNN’s Crossfire.  He wanted the Republican nomination for president in 1992 and 1996 – and didn’t get it – He was born in Washington, D.C., on November 2, 1938.

JOHN EDGAR HOOVER  longtime director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation was born in Washington, D.C., on January 1, 1895.  He was appointed director of the Bureau of Investigation (what was the predecessor to the FBI)  in 1924.  It officially became the FBI in 1935. Hoover is credited with building the agency in to a “large and efficient crime-fighting agency.” There was much controversy surrounding his later life and after his death.  Because of this FBI directors are now limited to 10-year terms.  There’s been a lot of speculation about his sexuality – whether or not he was homosexual.  Hoover was a “devoted”  Freemason and was a “coronated a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Freemason in the Southern Scottish Rite Jurisdiction.”  (Wikipedia)  He died in Washington, D.C., on May 2, 1972, at the age of 77.

ALBERT ARNOLD “AL” GORE  born March 31, 1948, in Washington, D.C. He and his family divided their time between Tennessee and Washinton, D.C., usually spending each school term in D.C.   He served as the 45th Vice President of the United States under President Bill Clinton, from 1993-2001.  He is now an author, business person, and environmental activist – he starred in the documentary An Inconvenient Truth in 2006 – He also wrote a book titled An Invonvenient Truth The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It,”  which won a Grammy for the best spoken word album in 2009.  He’s served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977-1985, and in the Senate (1985-1993) before becoming vice president. He was the 2000 Democratic presidential candidate.  He won the popular vote but not in the electoral college.  The election was settled by the U.S. Supreme Court, which settled by a 5-4 vote in favor of Bush.  Currently he’s founder/chair of Alliance for Climate Protection and of Generation Investment Management, co-founder of Current TV, and is on the Board of Directors of Apple, Inc., and a senior advisor to Google.

MARVIN PENTZ GAY JR (Marvin Gaye)  was born on April 2, 1939, in Washington, D.C.  He grew up with his parents and brothers and sister in the southeast section of D.C., Simple City projects, and after that his teen years were spent in the segregated northeastern part of the city.  Marvin played instruments and sang in the church choir when he was growing up and listened to doo-wop music and was a drummer with the DC Tones.  He signed up with Motown in 1961, though he eventually fought what he considered a restrictive system, and stuck out on his own, with albums such as What’s Going On (1971) and Let’s Get It On; proving  that he was able to do so.
Marvin died from a gunshot wound, inflicted by his father during a scuffle, on April 1, 1984.  He was one day shy of his 45th birthday.   After his death he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1987).
