Americans today suffer from hearing loss that interferes with their ability to understand conversations

He won’t ever hear a thing I say, and this is a quite common complaint among wives and the general implication is that this woman is purposely ignored and her spouse tuning in to the daily paper to shun a conversation with her. But then dad should be given the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he really didn’t hear that call to help set the table or take out the trash or let in the dog. A national survey completed a couple decades ago showed that 14.5 million Americans have a hearing loss that interferes with their ability to understand conversations and to function socially and vocationally. The Department of Health Education and Welfare in America reveals that from ages 17 to 44 hearing impairments top the list of chronic health problems in the U.S., with males more frequently afflicted than the females. We see the best solutions with today’s transistor models working as excellent hearing aids which are very different from the trumpets for ears used then.

A recent survey showed that 70 per cent of Americans who buy hearing aids do so without the benefit of a prior professional examination by an independent medical specialist, otologist, a doctor trained in the science of the ear and its diseases, audiologist, a certified hearing specialist, or both. A man from a newspaper in New York shares his case.

He directly bought a hearing aid from a retailer after realizing that his hearing got worse and he was only middle aged. In the several years that followed, his hearing got worse. He was found to have an inoperable cancer when he sought medical help after pain and discharge but it was too late already. When aspirin is given in high doses, viral and bacterial infections, certain antibiotics, types of diuretics used to treat high blood pressure, the deterioration of nerves and blood vessels through aging and occasionally by a tumor on the auditory nerve, people can eventually acquire hearing damage.

To avert avoidable hearing loss, most physicians recommend the early healing of all ear infections. Some other tips given for people include not flying with a cold, not to use instruments which also include cotton swabs in order to eliminate wax in the ear of the person. The wax in the ears of a patient should be left there if it interferes with hearing until it is removed by an otologist. A doctor may change the drug or adjust the dosage of his patient’s hearing gets compromised. The regular physical examinations of adults include hearing tests and the adults are asked to undergo this as well.

The individuals that ingest drugs that make them prone to hearing impairment, those over the age of 65 as well as those whose careers are found within extremely noisy environments or areas must take these tests seriously. He died of complications from a cold.  He had the shortest tenure in U.S. presidential history.  (d. 1841)

 DAVID DEAN RUSK  Secretary of State under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson; the longest serving Secretary of State, behind Cordell Hull.  He  was born in Cherokee County, Georgia in 1909.  He also served as a colonel during World War II and received the Legion of Merit Award.  (d. 1994)

 ROGER MUDD was born in 1928, in Washington, D.C.,   He is a television journalist and broadcaster.  Mudd’s most recent job is as primary anchor for The History Channel.  Before that he was weekend and weekday substitute anchor of CBS Evening News and also co-anchor of NBC Nightly News and hosted NBC Meet the Press.  He has received the Peabody Award, the Joan Shorenstein Award for Distinguished Washington Reporting and five Emmy Awards.

 CAROLE (KLEIN) KING was born in 1942, in New York City.  She is an American singer and songwriter in the genres of folk rock, pop, and jazz.  Carole and her husband Gerry Goffin have written over two dozen chart hits for many artists during the 1960s.  Many of these have become standards.  She has four Grammy Awards to her credit and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (along with Gerry Goffin).  Some of the songs include Love Me Tomorrow (1960), Take Good Care of My Baby (1960), The LocoMotion (1962), Crying in the Rain  and Go Away Little Girl.   

 MARIA de LOURDES VILLIERS FARROW was born in 1945 in Los Angeles, California.  She is an American actress and singer.  She has more than forty films to her credit.  Farrow has won many awards including a Golden Globe Award, three BAFTA Film Award nominations, and won for best actress at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.  She’s also done extensive humanitarian work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.  She also is involved in humanitarian activities for Darfur, Chad and Central African Republic. In 2008 Time Magazine selected her as one of the world’s most influential people.
