The Top 3 Secrets About Outdoor Mats

It would be not be a surprising fact if majority of the people in this world today would answer stress as the number one problem they face as they go along with their daily lives.  After all, stressors can be found everywhere – in the school, the office where they work, the neighborhood they reside in and so on.  This is the main reason why rest and recreation periods should be given top priority when summer or winter vacation comes.  For regular workers, a holiday provides a much needed respite from the demands of the job.  Even a week-long getaway will have a therapeutic value already.  The change in pace and environment will stimulate the individual and reinvigorate his tired spirit.

There are a lot of options to go to when you are in search of a meaningful trip.  Climbing a mountain is a great suggestion for the adventurous.  The smell of fresh air and sight of tall trees providing a green cover to the ground will act as a calming balm to the weary.  If you prefer the sound of the waves gently rolling to the shore, then head to the nearest beach.  If it’s not possible, a lake will do just as well.  Whatever you decide on, you will be required to bring along a high quality outdoor mat.

There are three top secrets that you should know about outdoor mats before you get one.  Read on.

A superior outdoor mat must be made of 100% virgin polypropylene because it has been tested and proven to withstand continuous wear and tear actions.  It is also considered as one of the most durable raw materials in the mat making industry.  Your chosen mat should have also undergone a UV ray stabilizing treatment so that the harmful effects of the sun will be minimized.  Also take note that there should be three interwoven straws in your mat.  Anything less than that will cause you to have problems even after just a single use.  The three interwoven straws signify finer strength and thickness.

In addition, your mat must be neatly trimmed at the edges with the help of a heat gun to prevent frays from occurring.  The mat size will depend on the buyer.  You have the option of whether you should buy a small one for your personal use, or a big one to accommodate your significant others.  There are a lot of sizes available in the market. Currently, the smallest one is 6 ft. x 9 ft. while the largest piece is 8 ft. x 20 ft.

The corner tie downs should also be a big consideration when you are searching for your dream mat.  It should be reinforced in order for you to be spared the hassle of getting rocks to keep it firmly planted on the ground during windy times.

Lastly, a mat can have other functions as well.  It can serve as a rug to be placed in the deck or terrace during the time it is not used for outdoor activities.  With its appealing design, it can serve as an interesting accent and even as a great conversational piece.  You only need to harness your creativity to make this work. Happy searching!

Everyone needs one or more outdoor mats for their homes. But there are alot of different shapes, prices and qualities. If you want to know more about outdoor rugs and mats be sure to check out our website today.

Healing Crystals Benefit Your Children

Healing Crystals Benefit Your Children

Children benefit greatly from the use of healing crystals and minerals, as will you and your whole family. Children are naturally fascinated by crystals and minerals, so this is also an excellent opportunity for you both to learn more about the natural world.

The main reasons to use crystal and mineral energy with children is to calm the child, help the child sleep, feel secure, or to alleviate fears.

Facing the crazy adult world can be an anxiety-ridden experience for a child, and seeing and sensing their fear ties we adults into knots (The first day of kindergarten! What a nightmare). Below is a list of crystals and minerals you can use to help support your child (and you) during these difficult times:

1. A wonderful stone to use for stressful situations is Rose Quartz. It emits an energy as comforting as a mother’s hug. We all need a hug from our mom now and then. Rose Quartz is often used in jewelry and is commonly found in major craft stores in the jewelry making aisle.

Before the scary big day arrives for your child, explain to your child how Rose Quartz can help ease their fear. Then pick up Rose Quartz beads at a craft store (or online) along with stringing line or wire. Make single or matching Rose Quartz bracelets or simple necklaces with your child.

Wear your new jewelry on the big day, reminding your child how the stone’s energy will help him or her feel safe through the event while it also helps you. Your child will feel comforted, his or her faith renewed, and you, my friend, will be a hero!

Rose Quartz also works wonderfully as a sleep aid, especially when used with Blue Lace Agate. The combined energy of the two stones will work together to clear and calm the atmosphere around your child’s pillow. The energy will enter his or her energy field after your child goes to bed and will remain the night. The Rose Quartz soothes and calms frazzled nerves while the Blue Lace Agate quiets an agitated mind full of ideas and dreams. Try hanging Rose Quartz and Blue Lace Agate beads from a mobile over a small child’s bed, well out of reach of the child.

2. Many children have nightmares and/or are afraid of the dark. Amethyst is a purple crystal you can use to help ease these fears. The energy of Amethyst is also ideal for helping you or your child focus mentally. You may already own Amethyst jewelry.

A man I know uses Amethyst throughout his entire house, on window sills, shelves, everywhere. He carries Amethyst on his person. He claims the stone’s energy has quieted his temper, made him more easy-going, and has balanced the general energy in his home. His wife and teenage daughter say the same. They wear Amethyst jewelry and love its effects.

3. The Agate family is awash in energy that can aid in relieving fears, stress, and emotional issues. Agates have a quiet subtle energy not in the least overwhelming.

A. The energy of Blue Lace Agate is a grounding stone also useful for emotional support. It brings a sense of peace and determination to anyone feeling less than secure.

B. Moss Agate possesses a nurturing energy strongly rooted to Earth energy. Its energy gives strength during new beginnings, like starting at a new school, and improves self-esteem. Here’s a tip: place Moss Agate around your plants! You will see an improvement in growth.

C. Botswana Agate is another member of this family that promotes universal love, creativity, and can help anyone trying to discover who he or she truly is (the seemingly never-ending struggle for teenagers). Some people feel this particular type of agate possesses anti-depressant traits.

4. Citrine, or yellow quartz, is a cleansing stone as cheerful as sunlight. Citrine’s energy would be highly useful in a family with battling or noisy siblings. Its energy cleanses negative energy from the environment and the combatants’ energy bodies. This helps restore peace to the household.

Citrine energy is wonderful in a sick room! Place it near the sick child’s bed.

Use Citrine throughout your home as you might those plastic air fresheners. You do not have to tell anyone why you keep yellow rocks on the tables or shelf. Claim you’re a collector, if you must. No one else has to know how Citrine energy works for it to work! The same goes for any other crystal or mineral you may use in your home or life.

5. Every child experiences that nasty feeling known as ‘homesickness’. Fear, insecurity, and a lack of self-confidence often result. Below are a few stones that can help your child, and perhaps you while you worry about your child being somewhere far away.

A. Rhodonite is a deep pink color with black streaks. This mineral’s energy stabilizes the emotions, especially very young frightened emotions prone to panic. Rhodonite’s energy grounds negative energies and supports calm, patience, and self confidence.

B. Howlite, a white stone streaked with gray, is good to hold onto when panic sets in or when calm, clear thinking is needed in a stressful situation.

C. Rhodocrosite possesses a beautiful pinkish-coral color. It grounds and stabilizes over-wrought emotions, and promotes a sense of love and self-worth.

6. The loving energy of Pink Calcite encourages peace and well-being. It can help your child to overcome his or her fears, and is very useful for anyone with grief or trauma issues as it helps to clear out the stale negative energies so love can roll in.

Parents, listen up! Pink Calcite is considered to be the ideal stone for students as it helps the student to focus, analyze, and retains lessons. (Pink Calcite could help Mom or Dad at work!)

The above crystals and minerals can be purchased online in the shape of small hearts and angels. If your child is going through a hard time, or is about to face a stressful new experience, then let your child pick out a heart or angel carved from the type of crystal or mineral they like best. Explain the heart or angel contains your love, support, and confidence and that your child only needs hold the heart or angel to feel you there facing the big day with him or her.

Cruise Ship Entertainment – How to Get the Best and Forget the Rest

Pimp Up My Entertainment, Baby…

How to get the best seats in the showroom

How to avoid the sleepers

How to learn something (info-tainment)

Arranging private shows

How to get the best seats in the showroom -

Saving seats in the showroom is technically disallowed by the cruise lines – but people do it anyway. This is not a problem for experienced cruisers since we know that the saved seats are not likely to be the most desirable ones anyway. Intuitively, one would think that you would want to be right down front. Not so. The most desirable seats are in the balcony or near the back of the main floor. Why? First, you can sneak out without making a scene if the show is a real sleeper – something you’ll definitely want to do right after the third chorus of “My Way”. Secondly, the people down front are not only trapped for the duration – they are Comedian Fodder. No one looks forward to being the butt of the comic’s jokes – or to being the sucker who surrenders his wedding ring to the Magician – only to have it wrapped in a marked up dollar bill prior to being stuffed into a lemon. So, unless you are a ham to the point of masochism, best to avoid the first ten rows.

How to avoid the sleepers -

We wish we had a rock solid “works every time” formula for you here – but we don’t. Determining what constitutes good entertainment is such a subjective interpretation – so relevant to one’s taste, mood and cultural background – you’ll just have to follow the above advice on “best seats” to sample the various shows. You can always head off to the Dirty Dancing Contest in the disco if the first fifteen minutes of a show fails to wind your watch.

How to learn something (info-tainment) -

Higher Education, here we come! More and more lines are offering on board classes in venues that rival the most prestigious ivy league institutions. Cruise passengers can gobble up all the Brain Food they can eat – on such subjects as Culinary Arts, Wine Tasting, Investment Strategies, Ecology, Video Production, Computer Literacy (evidently there are computers out there that can’t read or write) and so on. Some of these courses are free. Some have a cover charge.

Arranging private shows -

Hey, guys, I’d love to tell you that show girls from the chorus line can be hired to come to your cabin for a private lap dances. But, alas, it just isn’t so.

First of all the cruise line wouldn’t allow it. Secondly, the audience would most likely be limited to single passengers only. Otherwise, you’d have to have a very, very understanding spouse.

But here’s a thought. Given the continuous roll out of new, outrageous and previously un-conceived-of activities like the zip line, climbing walls, specialty shops and themed night clubs – how long do you think it will be before some enterprising young cruise line entrepreneur will build a ship with a “Gentleman’s Club” on board?

All it takes is a Scotch or two to bring the possibilities clearly into focus. The club would be complete with strobe lights, techno music and a stripper’s pole – and located right next to the ship’s chapel. Close proximity of these two seemingly conflicting venues would be a boon for two reasons:

A. It would facilitate the instant rehabilitation of club customers suddenly overcome with guilt. Full and immediate absolution would be possible before the spouse arrives on the scene.

B. All night participants in bachelor or bachelorette parties the night before a shipboard wedding would literally be able to crawl over to the next day’s ceremony on hands and knees, should that prove necessary.

Sadly, it could be years before we see such a classy shipboard innovation. The interim solution – an on board Stripper Pole Rental service. Newlyweds would be offered a weekly rate…Senior Citizens a special discounted hourly rate. These easily portable units could be delivered to the cabin, setup then later retrieved by highly discreet room stewards.

Currently, the closest thing to “private shows” is what goes down at your dining room table every evening. These spectacles are courtesy of very talented wait staff – a waiter or bus-person with a bag full of close-up magic tricks, a comedian, etc. – as discussed in the Pimp My Dining Experience article.

Additionally, themed groups traveling together often arrange for private meetings, speeches and/or performances by their leader or Pied Piper during the cruise. (see “Simon Cowell School of Charm Cruise” on the Pimp My Cruise Fare article) Meeting facilities are usually provided to groups free of charge.

And, lastly – if you know someone who knows someone who has a brother-in-law who works for the cruise line – you may be able to arrange for private tours of the galley, engine room and/or navigation bridge.

If all else fails – see if you can get a staff member to invite you down to the crew bar. What’s that like, you ask? Well, do you remember the inter-galactic night club scene from the Star Wars movie?

Randy Gage – Scam or Legit Marketing Genius Who Cares? MLM Manifesto reaches out!

Randy Gage – Scam or Legit Marketing Genius Who Cares? MLM Manifesto reaches out!

Randy Gage is the John Gotti of MLM. All the jewelry and makeup seems to be distracting , but his message it right on track.
It is about time we as professional network marketers join forces and stop fighting over “their” piece of the pie. We can make this pie BIGGER by eliminating so much of the negativity surrounding the industry of MLM. Randy Gage also makes it clear that we as professional must make certain that we relay the message that MLM is a viable and ethical means of distribution. We have unique products not suited for typical retail.

Randy Gage Tip #1: We need to understand and eliminate the horrendous business practices in our profession that lead to government harassment, media attacks, and negative public perceptions.

Randy Gage Tip #2 Randy goes on to say we need to discover the mistakes most marketers make that have them spinning their wheels and not duplicating. Your failure to duplicate, handicaps more than 90% of all others in your organization.

Randy Gage Tip #3 Learn the common lies in MLM.
How about when you hear some say “everybody can do this”. If I’m trying to sell a thick, juicy porterhouse steak to a vegetarian, I will never convince him that this is exactly what he needs and hat he needs to share the opportunity with a friend as well. One MUST have an entrepreneurial mindset to participate in MLM. We also need to understand that marketing is not about the product, the comp plan, or the leadership of the company. If you get this your going to cut years off the learning curve. It is about RELATIONSHIPS. Period. Being an expert on the product, comp plan, or any other aspect of the company is not replicatable and trying to be, will lead to years of grief and frustration. NOT all personalities can be specialists, yet all personality types can duplicate a system.
Celebrities DO NOT sell products, they sell HYPE! Do not be fooled, there is a difference, and no networking company has ever succeeded with this as their primary strategy. The celebrity doesn’t understand how the business works and this method for producing wealth or garnering leads is NOT duplicatable
STOP the Urban Myths. MLM has created millionaires but it took more than 30 minutes a day talking to “Uncle Bob” or the girl that serves ice cream cones at the mall.
Getting rich in MLM is very possible but it’s not going to be quick and easy. Anyone telling you that you can run it in 30 minutes a day or 5 to 10 hours a week and make a living is feeding you a line. If you work MLM full time, it could still be a 4 to 5 year committment, maybe more to create an income you’re comfortable with.

Randy Gage also goes on to say you CAN NOT use small business tactics if your want big business results. Ridiculous car window “Seeking Apprentice” flyers, buttons and yard signs have never made anyone into a multimillionaire overnight. If you’re just looking for a couple extra 0 dollars or maybe a thousand a month, this may work for you, but if you’re serious you simply need a different strategy.

Randy Gage tip #4 Randy Gage wants you to understand your role in social networking and how it will play out in the future. You need to be prepared and understand old school tactics don’t always work. Stay fresh.

Randy Gage tip #5 We need to understand the deceitful recruiting practices and know how to protect ourselves.
Spillover is not your magic bullet and will not fund your retirement years.
Beware of people who claim they are producing huge checks when they just began. Randy Gage goes on to say most of these people rolled over their entire team of scammers into a new company and are producing hyped results. This practice is deceitful.

Beware of high percentage payouts. These have “breakage” points so people never qualify for full commissions and the money goes into company slush funds.

Ever hear the the “Sweetheart Deal”? If someone is claiming they have positions that are already producing money run the other way.
Beware of anyone using the terms “On Track For”. I’m “On Track For” 0,000 dollars this year. Yeah, if I made last week and 0 this week, I’m making a 10% increase every week. Don’t believe it!
This one is making me laugh while I type it. How about people that say “I’ll build your downline for you”. Then what do they need your for??? Why don’t they build their own downline and not worry about paying you to NOT work the business?

Randy Gage tip #6 We must learn to recognize scams, pyramids and Ponzi schemes. These companies operating under the guise of an MLM company need to be shut down at all cost.

Randy Gage tip #7 Lastly, we need to unite in the spirit of cooperation and make the coming years the “Golden Era of Network Marketing that will be talked about with reverence for decades to come!”

Beyond Manhattan: The Hudson Valley

Beyond Manhattan: The Hudson Valley

Although Manhattan Island is world-renowned for its sights, restaurants, and cultural offerings, few venture beyond its boundaries.  Yet the Hudson Valley, rich in natural scenery and historic attractions, can be easily explored within a day or two and is only a short drive from the city.

Located over the Whitestone Bridge, the 150-mile valley, running from Yonkers to Albany in lower New York state and split by the Hudson River, is comprised of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area which had been established by United States Congress in 1996 to recognize, preserve, protect, and interpret the nationally significant history and resources of the valley for the benefit of the nation.  Four primary, north-south routes access the area: the Taconic State Parkway and Route 9 on the east side and Route 9W and I-87, alternatively known as the New York State Thruway, on the west side.

Driving over the Whitestone Bridge during a recent autumn visit, which seemed to link two diametrically-opposed worlds, I felt as if I had been disconnected from the city’s congestion and stresses, deposited on to the Hutchinson River Parkway, threshold to rural New York State and, beyond, the barnstorming grass field of the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome.  Navigating Route 9, which curved between shale rock and autumn-torched, multi-colored trees, I paralleled the blue-reflective surface of the Hudson River whose western shore rose toward Bear Mountain in a collage of colorful tree bursts.  The ruby reds, appearing like flames, dominated the palette, while the burn oranges, as if glowing like pumpkins in the sunlight, were almost luminescent.  The golds, although more subtle, were rich, while the light yellows and gentle greens seemed to cling to late summer.  The route eclipsed both topographical and seasonal boundaries.

Irvington, one of the first historic sights in the Lower Hudson Valley, had been named for Washington Irving, author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle, and was the location of his gabled and weathervaned house, Sunnyside.  Philipsburg Manor, located nearby in Tarrytown, had been an 18th-century farm and gristmill.

Van Cortlandt Manor, dating from the late 1600s and home of New York’s first Lieutenant Governor, had been developed as a major tourist attraction with its 18th century tavern and blacksmith and hearth-cooking demonstrations.  The town of Stoney Point, a Revolutionary War strategic fort, is located across the river.

The Storm King Art Center, in Mountainville, is an outdoor sculpture park featuring contemporary works by Calder, Moore, and Noguchi.

The Hudson-spanned Bear Mountain Bridge, which leads to the Highlands of Hudson, accesses both Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks on the west side, while the US Military Academy at West Point, located on the east side, is the nation’s oldest military academy, identifiable by the stone embattlements on its shore.

Newburgh, located across the river in Mid-Hudson Valley, had been the location of the last east-west Hudson River ferry before the current Newburgh-Beacon Bridge had been constructed in 1963.  The historic area, the location of the 1835 Dutch Reformed Church designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, also encompassed Washington’s Headquarters, the oldest publicly-owned historic house museum and site of his residence during the last 16 months of the Revolutionary War.  The nearby New Windsor Cantonment had been the living quarters of his troops.

Hyde Park, on the river’s east side, had been the birthplace of Franklin Deleanor Roosevelt, United States president, and features Springwood, the Roosevelt home; the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and Museum; Val-Kill, the retreat of Mrs. Roosevelt; Top Cottage, the president’s hilltop retreat; and the Vanderbilt Mansion, the 50-room residence of Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt.  Across the river, New Paltz, with its historic, stone church- and house-lined Huguenot Street, commemorates the 1690 French emigrant settlement, itself only minutes from the Victorian Mohonk Mountain House, a National Historic Landmark, and Minnewaska State Park Preserve.

Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, located just east of the historic villages of Rhinebeck and Red Hook, is a living, early-aviation museum featuring original aircraft and engines and offers weekend air shows from mid-June to mid-October.

After walking through the wooden, bridge-like entrance on one recent visit, the 1920 barnstorming-resembling aerodrome had appeared before me.

An original 1909 high-wing, fabric-covered Bleiriot XI arced skyward, albeit briefly, from its rolling, sweeping grass field straddled on either side by the red, orange, and yellow October-brushed trees reminiscent of the 1910 and 1920 barnstorming days, creating the illusion that this era of aviation had somehow been preserved and had continued to play out within the time vacuum beyond the museum’s gates.  The hangers, as if ignorant of the calendar, proudly braved the winds, bearing such names as Albatros Werke, Royal Aircraft Factory Farnborough, A.V. Roe and Company, Ltd., and Fokker.  But it was the multitude of mono-, bi-, and triplanes which most fiercely wrestled with one’s present-time conception.

Fifteen-minute flights in a 1929 New Standard D-25 biplane are offered before and after the air shows themselves, three of which I have personally taken during my many visits.  Assuming an ear-shattering explosion from its propeller and pelted with engine-spitting castor oil, the D-25 gently lifted its tail wheel off the ground and surrendered its dual, fabric-covered wings to the sky. Bitten by the stinging, slipstream-produced October wind whose force almost inhibited respiration, and periodically needled by the engine-spit castor oil, I looked out over the wing.  The ground, camouflaged by a dense pattern of orange, yellow, and red autumn-transformed trees, was otherwise devoid of contemporary civilization as the biplane surmounted the silver surface of the Hudson River.

The Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, located a few miles from Rhinebeck, crosses the Hudson River and accesses the 1,094-square-mile Catskill Forest Preserve, location of three, 1,500-foot mountains which provide winter skiing: Belleayre, Hunter, and Ski Windham.

So beautiful had the Hudson valley been that it had spawned a 19th century painting movement called the Hudson River School of Landscape Painters, which had been sparked by Thomas Cole and Frederic Church, whose Persian-style estate, Olana, is located on the river’s west side.  Painting directly from nature, these artists, among others, had created a visual medium which expressed optimism, vitality, and personal theology through color, light, and perspective.

Dotted with vineyards, the valley affords the tourist the opportunity to sample many local New York State wines.

Albany, with its modern sculpture-resembling architecture, is located in the Upper Hudson Valley and is characterized by the granite French Chateau State Capitol building.  The state capital since 1797 and the second incorporated city in America, it continues to operate under its 1686 charter, and has continually served as a transportation center since the Indian trail days.

The Hudson Valley can alternatively be enjoyed from Amtrak’s day-long, 381-mile route from New York to Montreal designated the “Adirondack” and considered one of its four most scenic US rail journeys.

The next time you visit Manhattan, take the “short” drive over the Whitestone Bridge: it may take you a “long” way…

A graduate of Long Island University-C.W. Post Campus with a summa-cum-laude BA Degree in Comparative Languages and Journalism, I have subsequently earned the Continuing Community Education Teaching Certificate from the Nassau Association for Continuing Community Education (NACCE) at Molloy College, the Travel Career Development Certificate from the Institute of Certified Travel Agents (ICTA) at LIU, and the AAS Degree in Aerospace Technology at the State University of New York – College of Technology at Farmingdale. Having amassed almost three decades in the airline industry, I managed the New York-JFK and Washington-Dulles stations at Austrian Airlines, created the North American Station Training Program, served as an Aviation Advisor to Farmingdale State University of New York, and devised and taught the Airline Management Certificate Program at the Long Island Educational Opportunity Center. A freelance author, I have written some 70 books of the short story, novel, nonfiction, essay, poetry, article, log, curriculum, training manual, and textbook genre in English, German, and Spanish, having principally focused on aviation and travel, and I have been published in book, magazine, newsletter, and electronic Web site form. I am a writer for Cole Palen’s Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in New York. I have made some 350 lifetime trips by air, sea, rail, and road.

Makeovers Salon & Spa Owner Shares Spring & Summer Fashion Tips

Blum, who attended the 2009 fashion shows in New York which unveiled the 2010 Spring collections and who just returned from serving on the Wella team for celebrity designer Donna Karan at Fashion Week 2010 as they introduced the DKNY Fall 2010 collection, offers his insight on the hottest looks for spring and summer:

Neutral colors, watercolor prints and bright florals will be predominant in clothing, but as far as make-up is concerned, the palate is nude and the effect is soft. The natural look is in, but full on, which means eyebrows are groomed and predominant, lashes are lush and make-up is nude with hint of blush. That splash of bright color on the lips will be the key feature and matte coral-reds will be most popular colors.

There’s a huge movement towards the organic and natural. More and more fashion designers are using organic cotton and linen textiles. Think “hippie-chic”. To go along with this, nails will be natural looking and gel nails and neutral colored gel polishes will be hot.

Whether hair is long or short, the style will be sporty and carefree. Hair color will be very natural looking with glosses and glazes leading the way. Talk to your stylist/colorist about which hair color/style would best suit you and how to acheive that “just rolled out of bed but still look fabulous” sporty type of look.

Skin care will be a top priority. The natural look demands beautiful skin. Organic, very moisturizing skin products will be at the top of everyone’s list for skin care. Skin treatments such as Microdermabrasion, which is a skin resurfacing treatment used to rejuvenate and restore a natural glow to the skin, will be very popular. Microdermabrasion works on all skin types and helps get rid of blemishes and acne and gives a healthy, youthful appearance.

Options for Joint Support

Smoking joints doesn’t carry the same meaning that they used to for many people.  For some it’s old age setting in, while for others, particularly those who have participated in impact sports or subjected themselves to bouts of extreme training, joint problems start as early as one’s late 20s.  Your body is a machine and without lubrication, parts break down causing decreased performance.  The surface of joints are composed of bone covered with a lining of cartilage.  During movement these cartilage lined surfaces rub against each other wearing down the cartilage.  Thankfully getting a “repair” isn’t as complicated as taking your care into a mechanic and arguing a ridiculously high estimate.  There are several options for joint care but what works and what’s right for you?

Glucosamine is the pop star here.  One could say it’s the “creatine” of the joint kingdom.  The research is abundant and points toward efficacy with no side effects.  The only problem with glucosamine is that it’s not an instant cure.  Supplementation with Glucosamine usually takes about a month to take effect.  Glucosamine, an amino (amine) sugar (glucos), is a building block of glycosaminoglycans, a component of cartilage.  Glucosamine supplementation is theorized to assist in cartilage growth thus reducing inflammation from joint stress.  Glucosamine is often “stacked” with Chondroitin which together prevent the atrophy of cartilage.

Daniel O. Clegg, M.D., of the University of Utah School of Medicine conducted a two year study on the effects of Glucosamine Chondroitin on subjects suffering from osteoarthritis.  The combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin were proven effective in the reduction of patients with even severe knee pain.  However, neither Glucosamine nor Chondroitin improved the subjects’ condition by itself.

A study performed at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada also showed patients with osteoarthritis benefitting from glucosamine and chondroitin supplementation both before and post surgery.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is part of what keeps our joints springy and able to absorb shock.  With age, the amount of HA in the joint decreases.  ven den Bekerom and Mulier conducted studies in Belgium with subjects ranging between 30 and 70 years of age who were experiencing hip inflammation and associated problems.  A series of trials were run incorportating HA injections.  The subjects were then evaluated using the VAS pain during walking score and the Harris Hip Score (HHS).  The majority of subjects reported a significant reduction in pain and had improved HHS scores.

But not many can afford the cost of HA injections and/or do not care for the contrivances of doing so.  So are oral forms of HA useful?  Unfortunately, most studies have been on horses or rats and not humans.  A study done in Czechoslovakia using a compound called “Chondrorevit,” which was a mixture of 20mg HA and 400 mg Chondroitin  yielded positive results in patients as well.

Cissus quadrangularis is an extract from a vine plant in India.  It is one of those hoodoo supplements that is marketed more on it’s exotic nature than any scientific merit.  I’m not knocking it but it is of note that not much research has or is being done on it and while noted publications like JAMA have done exposes on Glucosamine they have not touched on Cissus.  Cissus has a storied tradition of healing fractures and helping with arthritis in India.  Recently it is being heralded as an anabolic compound.  My eyes start to roll at this point.  Don’t even get me started on phytosterols and how they ARE NOT the same as anabolic steroids, pro hormones, or even pop rocks.  On Cissus.org there are many claims but evidence is in the form of a “dare” to search online for testimonials.  I’d love to see open heart procedures lobbied like this.  Even still, I am a big believer in holistic medicine and think that every witch should be given a chance before being drowned.  Cissus has proven to be useful in weight loss in at least one study as well.

My new favorite supplement, for no other reason than it’s ABSURD nature and the veil of mystery that surrounds it, is  Velvet Antler.  When I say absurd I am not implying that this is a bogus product but rather that the notion of ingesting ground antlers is absurd (as if ingesting cow testicles and shark fins aren’t, but anyway).  In fact, most of the few studies done on Velvet Antler have yielded promising results.  Velvet Antler yields levels of Chondroitin sulfate.  It also contains glycoamins, and calcium.  All of these components have been linked and proven in studies to assist with joint health by stimulating the production of cartilage and the synthesis of bones.

One should always consult with a physician before starting any supplement regimen.  With that in mind, it never hurts to experiment a little and see what works best.  Though the combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin is the most researched and popular choice for joint pain, many people report better results once they switched to Hyaluronic acid or Cissus, or tried Velvet Antler.  What’s important is which one alleviates your discomfort and gets you back to your optimal training routine.

The Black Keys Garnish and Season the Raw Meat But Brothers Still Tastes Good

The Black Keys Garnish and Season the Raw Meat But Brothers Still Tastes Good

Full disclosure. I love the Black Keys. With their first seven albums they cemented their, “can do nothing wrong” (except when collaborating with rap and hip hop artists – Blackroc never happened) cachet with me. There are very few bands that make it to that level with me: Velvet Underground, Nirvana, The Pixies, Heartless Bastards, Beastie Boys, so coming in to this review of their latest album, Brothers, please understand I have a baked in bias. I expect it to be sweet.

Upon a first listen it looks like the boys learned some things from their collaboration with Danger Mouse on the last effort, Attack & Release, and perhaps even from rubbing elbows with geniuses like Raekwon, RZA and Q-Tip  on the terrible Blackroc album. The sound is rich. It’s full. And completely saturated in soul. It’s not the stripped won duo raw rock of the Fat Possum gems, and I’m cool with it.

Brothers opens with Everlasting Light, and I have to tell you something right here. I’m gay for Marc Bolan. Dude did it right. I kiss the smooth behind of the Electric Warrior by T Rex, so when Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney step right in with the Mambo Sun homage, I’m sold again. I’m paying the sticker price twice because that’s how much it’s hittin’ home. Mr. Auerbach’s pipes are in fine form, the guitar and drums perfect and now backing vocals slide in.

The table is set for the show piece, the one cut, the SINGLE of the album: Next Girl. Ba na na. Ba na na. “Oh my next girl will be nothing like my ex girl…I made mistakes back then, I’ll never do it again. Oh my next girl will be nothing like my ex girl…it was a painful dance but I got a second chance.”

I’m not one to analyze lyrics, but that is wicked writing there. Right to the core of break up, and tenuous relationship, and hurtful love. God this is a good song.

The album is starting to really wash over me. Tighten Up is whistling by. Patrick is pummeling me in Howlin’ For You.

The Only One washes me away into cool still waters…it’s beautiful.  Ten Cent Pistol comes in like Primal Scream, then simply kills it with this intriguing murder story told on top of a highly produced lush sound. This might be the best song on a loaded album.

Gotta love the line in The Go Getter, “Hold on and don’t let go, pretty girls help soften the blow.” Unknown Brother is like a Hasil Adkins – Bill Withers collaboration. Dirty guitar on a soulful feather bed.  Never Gonna Give You Up – Jerry Butler cover. Really nice. Not to be confused with Rick Astley’s rick rolled meme. This is why I love The Black Keys. They can cover of an old school song and do it right, keeping the original soul and charm, but adding a twist that tells me the future might just be OK.

Vegas’ Preseason College Football Top Ten, Buckeyes edge out Tide for top spot

Vegas’ Preseason College Football Top Ten, Buckeyes edge out Tide for top spot

Nearly every college football preseason poll has the defending BCS champion Alabama Crimson Tide ranked at the top spot except for this one. More often than not, Vegas gets it right, so why not use the odds they come with to construct the most accurate preseason college football poll. By using the BCS National Championship odds supplied by online gambling outfits, the Ohio State Buckeyes have the best shot at hoisting the BCS trophy on January 10, 2011.

1. Ohio State (+450)

The Buckeyes have owned the Big Ten over recent years, winning five straight titles. Despite this dominance, they do not have a national title to show for it. Quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Terrelle Pryor is back to lead a Buckeye offense that returns ten starters. The defense also returns plenty of starters from a unit that ranked fifth in the nation in 2009. Add the fact that they play eight games in front of the home crowd and anything less than a ten win season would be a huge disappointment in Colombus.

2. Alabama (+500)

The defending BCS champs also return plenty of firepower on the offensive side of the ball led by Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram. Besides Ingram, eight starters return in total for the Crimson Tide including senior QB Greg McElroy and receiver Julio Jones. Obviously the Tide will be able to put points of the scoreboard but will they be able to keep their opponents from doing the same? Just one starter returns from last year’s defensive unit, so it will be almost impossible for them to repeat last year’s dominant output.

3. Oklahoma (+600)

This is about as high as you will see the Sooners ranked headed into the season. In order to be in the hunt for the BCS National Championship, they’ll need consistency from sophomore quarterback Landry Jones. His top target from last season, Ryan Broyels Jr. returns coming off a 15 touchdown season. The defensive side of the ball will have seven new, albeit talented starters. The biggest key for the Sooners in 2010 is for all the key players to remain healthy, unlike last season.

4. Florida (+700)

Who has the biggest shoes to fill in perhaps college football history? His name is John Brantley; that’s who will replace Tim Tebow under center in Gainesville. Brantley should have plenty of time to throw as four starters return on the offensive line. Running back Jeffery Demps is coming off two straight seven touchdown seasons and is prime for even bigger numbers as he doesn’t have to share carries with Tebow. Seven starters return on defense with studs waiting in the wings to take over for the departed. An October 2nd showdown at Alabama is circled on every bettors calendar; the Gators are currently 3 point underdogs.

5. Boise State (+1000)

Yup, that’s right, a school from a non-BCS conference is ranked in the top 5 and has a 10% chance of winning the national title according to the bookies. This shouldn’t surprise anyone considering the Broncos were a flawless 14-0 last season including a 17-10 victory over #4 TCU in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The defense should be rock solid as ten starters from 2009 return. Ten starters also return on an offense that lit up the scoreboards in ’09. Quarterback and Heisman candidate Kellen Moore threw 39 touchdowns and only 3 picks last year. They’ll be test early as they are just 2.5 point favorites as they visit Virginia Tech on September 6th.

6. Nebraska (+1200)

Even though the Huskers lost Ndamukong Suh to the NFL, they return plenty of talent on defense and should still dominate in 2010. Their offense wasn’t anything special last year, although they do return four starters on the offensive line, a thousand yard rusher (Roy Helu Jr.) and their three top receivers so improvement is expected. The Huskers have a favorable schedule as they’ll most likely be betting favorites in every game. They are currently 2.5 point favorites at home against Texas on October 16th.

7. Texas (+1500)

Speaking of the Longhorns, they make the third Big 12 team ranked in the top seven teams in the country. Coming off an undefeated regular season and a loss to Alabama in the National Championship game, Texas returns tons of talent. QB Colt McCoy has moved onto the NFL and his replacement will be Sophomore Garrett Gilbert who showed off some of his potential after replacing an injured McCoy in the title game. Back-to-back games versus Oklahoma on October 2nd, then on the road at Nebraska on October 16th will go a long way to determine whether the Longhorns can make it back to the title game. Texas is currently field goal underdogs versus the Sooners.

8. TCU (+1500)

The Horned Frogs rolled off a flawless 12-0 record before their Fiesta Bowl loss the Boise State. In their last seven 2009 regular season games, TCU scored at least 38 points in each game and scored 50+ in three of the last four. Points shouldn’t be a problem in 2010; four starts are back on the offensive line, signal caller Andy Dalton returns as does a able rushing duo. Don’t be surprised if TCU has another undefeated regular season. However, that still may not be enough to land them in the title game. They open at home versus Oregon State as 13 point favorites.

9. Oregon (+2000)

The Ducks ranked seventh in the nation in scoring last season (36.1 ppg). Those numbers could actually increase as nine starters return of offense including the entire line. Running back LaMichael James also returns after churning out 1,546 rushing yards and 14 scores last season. Nine starters also return on defense. With so much returning talent from a team that tallied ten wins last year, Oregon at +2000 to win it all screams ‘value’. Their biggest challenge will come on October 30th when they visit USC as 3 point dogs.

10. Iowa (+2500)

The Hawkeyes are coming off an 11 win season in which they didn’t lose their first game until November. There are six returning starters on offense including quarterback Ricky Stanzi and leading rusher Adam Robinson. In 2009, Iowa’s defense allowed only one opponent to score over 24 points in a game. Considering that eight starters return on D, they should be even better this year. Finally, Iowa will play all of their toughest games at home as Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State all travel to Iowa this year.

No. 24 Arizona uses defense, late TD to deny No. 9 Iowa

No. 24 Arizona uses defense, late TD to deny No. 9 Iowa

“I’m speechless right now trying to figure out what just happened out there,” Arizona coach Mike Stoops said. “When they were challenged, they challenged them right back.”

Looking for a big-ticket win nfl jersey  to solidify its rise to prominence, Arizona (3-0) stomped on Iowa early behind a slew of big plays that had old Arizona Stadium shaking. The Wildcats blocked a punt to set up their first score, Travis Cobb returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and Trevin Wade ran an interception back 85 yards for another score.

Up 20 points at the half, Arizona was well on its way to the measuring-stick win it needed after two lopsided Ws over pushovers.

Iowa (2-1) is no easy mark, though, and tightened its defense in the second half, grinding Arizona’s high-scoring offense to a halt. Ricky Stanzi hit two of his three touchdown passes in the third quarter and the Hawkeyes tied it in the fourth, when defensive end Broderick Binns stuck his hands up and the ball stuck, leading to a 20-yard interception return.

Then, momentum shot right back to Arizona.

With Binns trying to catch his breath and his mlb jerseys teammates still celebrating, the Wildcats partially blocked Trent Mossbrucker’s extra point, leaving the score at 27-all. Arizona shook out of its second-half funk on the next drive, moving 72 yards in nine plays for the Foles-to-Wright score, and sealed the first-big-test win with three sacks of Stanzi.

“Obviously, we’re disappointed to not come out with a win,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “Our sloppy play in that first half made it difficult.”

Iowa rolled over its first two not-so-challenging opponents by a combined score of 72-14. The road trip to the desert represented a little tougher challenge: a long-distance road game (over 1,500 miles) with a late start (9:30 p.m. Iowa City time) in hot-air-dryer heat (close to 100 at kickoff).

On top of that, the Hawkeyes were facing a talented Arizona team looking to prove itself against a big-school program in one of the most-anticipated nonconference games in the 81-year history of Arizona Stadium.

The Wildcats were certainly up for it, producing one big play after another in a stadium-rocking first half.

Arizona held Iowa to a quick three-and-out on its first drive, then David Roberts broke through to block Ryan Donahue’s punt, which Marquis Flowers recovered at the Hawkeyes 8. Three plays later, Foles hit David Douglas on a 5-yard slant for a touchdown that had the rowdies in red jumping and pumping their white pompoms.

Iowa was marching on its second drive, but receiver Marvin McNutt Jr. had the ball slip through his hands and it fell right to Wade, who had a clear shot to the end zone for an 85-yard score.

Barely five minutes into the game, Iowa was in a 14-0 hole.

The Hawkeyes kept plugging away on offense, though, moving 93 yards for a 4-yard touchdown pass from Stanzi to Jewel Hampton, the first touchdown against Arizona this season.

Then Cobb burst through a seam like one of the pregame nfl jersey fireworks on the ensuing kickoff and was gone, 100 yards for a touchdown that put Arizona up 21-7.

“That was tough to watch from the sidelines,” Binns said. “Iowa is not normally known for having a lot of problems on special teams.”

Tacking on two field goals by Alex Zendejas, including a career-long-matching 47-yarder, Arizona had a seemingly comfortable 27-7 halftime lead.

Seemingly.

Turning up the defensive pressure, Iowa stymied Arizona’s offense in the third quarter — 58 total yards — and pulled within 13 points on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Stanzi to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos.

Iowa came up with a big play of its own on special teams, recovering a muffed punt by Bug Wright at the Wildcats 18. Stanzi hit McNutt on a backpedaling touchdown pass at the edge of the end zone on the next play, making it 27-21.

Binns followed with his at-the-line grab and return for a score, only to watch in amazement from the sideline as the PAT wobbled away from the uprights.

Then it was Foles’ turn.

Getting the ball out quickly to avoid Iowa’s strengthening rush, the junior completed 4 of 5 passes on the final drive, hitting Wright for the decisive score with 3:57 left. Foles finished with 303 yards and two touchdowns on 28-of-39 passing, solidifying his — and his team’s — place among the country’s best up-and-comers.

“That was a big win for our program,” said Tim Kish, Arizona’s co-defensive coordinator.

One to remember.
