Hard Rockers Kiss Still Rocking On

The American band Kiss was formed in New York around 1973. Now over the past 34 years Kiss have sold over 19 million records in the U.S. alone and a whopping 80 million records worldwide. They have even been awarded with 22 gold records since their formation, even though the group has a history of different band members.

Kiss is well known for their live performances, having gimmicks like fire breathing, smoking guitars, blood spitting, pyrotechnics, and other extraordinary on stage antics. Because of their entertaining performances and unique sound, it`s no surprise Kiss has quickly developed a fan base worldwide.

The original members of Kiss were Gene Simmons, a schoolteacher and bass player, and Paul Stanley, a singer and guitarist who were both members of a band called Wicked Lester.

When Simmons and Stanley decided to leave Wicked Lester, they brought with them their bad boy image and formed the band Kiss with a horror style of presentation. This image later became the reason for being dubbed as one of the greatest rock and roll bands in the world of popular music.

Kiss became a complete band after recruiting Paul Ace Frehley (vocals and lead guitar) and Peter Criss (vocals and drums) through a newspaper advertisement that Stanley and Simmons set out.

The band Kiss produced a series of successful albums throughout the 1970s. With their donning, elaborate face make ups and black leather outfits, the Kiss band instantly became a hit and even adopted each of their own personas and stage names Stanley The Star Child, Simmons The Demon, Criss The Cat and Frehley The Space Man.

In 1974, Kiss` self titled debut album and Hotter Than Hell came out, which were both filled with crushing, raw music that would later become classic Kiss songs like Hotter than Hell, Strutter and Cold Gin. However, the band`s commercial stardom began with their 1975 album Dressed to Kill, which gave Kiss their signature tune Rock and Roll All Nite.

Around 1976 and with their release of Destroyer, Kiss was dubbed as the greatest rock n` roll band in America due to its Top 10 hits and its growing Kiss Army. The group, then, released Love Gun and Rock and Roll Over, which both became Platinum.

Unfortunately, because of creative differences and substance abuse, Frehley and Criss were both out of the band by 1982. As a result, the band`s commercial fortune and fan base also decreased during this time.

Without the make up, Kiss made a major comeback in 1983 and enjoyed a successful resurgence all through the early 1990s. Kiss` original lineup reunited in 1996, with their world renowned make ups on and performed in 210 cities for the Kiss Alive Worldwide Tour, which attended by over two million Kiss fanatics worldwide.

After the tour, Criss was replaced by Eric Singer and Frehley by Tommy Thayer, after both deciding to leave Kiss for good. The band still performs with Simmons and Stanley the only constant band members.

To this day with their evolving music, elaborate live acts, outlandish costumes and millions of fans and worldwide, Kiss remains as one of the greatest rock and roll bands in the world.

Each year I take my kids to the lake. We rent a cabin, play a lot of golf, swim and do whatever we feel like. The days are great and filled with activities but the nights are a different story. Plenty of fevered dystopian theses have posited that modern technology—the Internet, television, films, and music combined—will shorten our attention spans and create a generation filled with data but lacking intelligence.

This isn’t really an original idea. It’s a fear that’s been around since at least when comic books became a cultural bogeyman. And although that certainly rings true when one looks at the way the 24/7 news cycle serves more to distract us from yesterday’s news than shine light on today’s, it more than likely won’t be the catastrophe predicted. It just means future generations will absorb mass media differently.

With the advent of Internet culture, it was only a matter of time before a band like Girl Talk tickets—obsessed with hoarding and splicing together pop ephemera—would come around. Today’s music fans aren’t just listening to the singles on the radio (if they listen to the radio anymore) and the hottest new band on Pitchfork, they’re looking up one-hit-wonders from previous decades, looking at their favorite bands’ influences’ influences, and exploring the discographies of artists in genres they didn’t know existed. In that sea of music, Girl Talk’s Gregg Gillis snatches a beat here, a bass riff there, cutting ‘80s synth-rock singles into ‘90s gangsta rap, and generally blending everything together. He does so in a way that every sonic puzzle piece is distinct and identifiable because part of the fun with his music is picking out those pieces, enjoying the nostalgia and marveling and what they sound like juxtaposed with very different music.

A lot of the samples he uses are guilty pleasures, often mixed with universally liked songs or music from artists with an indie pedigree. The result is prodding the self-righteously hip to acknowledge that yes, Kelly Clarkson is pretty distasteful, but isn’t the beat for that song pretty catchy?

The electric ocean of the Information Age is a junkyard heap and a banquet rolled into one, and fortunately Gillis is knowledgeable enough to pick out the best morsels for us. Of course, nothing quite compares to getting Girl Talk tickets and seeing him do that live.

Phish Phans Have Phun

Phish is what music would sound like if there was no music business.

They are extremely creative, talented and fan friendly. While it may sound overtly sentimental, it’s safe to say that Phish is like four of your friends playing music on stage (and playing it very well).

That’s why in 1998, Rolling Stone said “Phish has become the most important band of the Nineties.”

Phish is comprised of Trey Anastasio (guitar), Mike Gordon (bass), Jon Fishman (drums) and Page McConnell (keyboards).

They began their career on the campus of the University of Vermont in 1983, and minus an over one year break, stayed together until 2004. Phish has recently announced a reunion tour for the summer of 2009.

Phish will play a hand-full of dates starting with three sold out shows at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia from March 6th to 8th. And they will continue to play shows all through June.

Rumor has it Phish will join the line-up at the Bonnaroo Festival sometime between June 11th and 14th.

Even Phish fans,who go by the name of phans, phriends, phamily, or Phishheads, claim the studio fails to capture the excitement they bring to the stage.

Their superior live performances and their cult-like following have garnered them comparisons to the Grateful Dead.

Both bands have legions of dedicated and loyal fans who often tour with the band by following them from city to city and show to show. They were “going on tour” with the band. Their shows would attract all kinds of people and things to buy and do. It was as if they were traveling circuses or fairs where a small city would be set up at each new show location. Both bands would often times play numerous nights in a row at a given location.

Both bands had liberal policies when it came to fans’ recording their concerts.

And both bands concentrated on performing live rather than studio recordings and commercial appearances. Attending a live Dead or Phish show was like no other experience.

However, the bands differed in their musical approach. The Grateful Dead’s sound was centered in folk, rock and blues, while Phish’s music followed a jazz aesthetic.

In this era, where recorded music is nearly worthless, their live shows are well-worth the price of a Phish ticket. Not only does one get to see and hear masterful musicians perfecting their craft, they are also treated to a show like no other.

Here are some highlights from past Phish shows:

Late 1990, in an attempt to increase audience participation within their shows, Phish had the crowd verbally react to certain musical cues. For instance, if Anastasio played The Simpsons theme song, the audience would yell, “D’oh!.”

In 1992, Phish increased its collaboration with the audience with an experiment called the “Big Ball Jam.” Each member would throw a large beach ball into the crowd and play a note each time his ball was struck by fans.

Other experiments followed, like “The Rotation Jam.” In this jam, each member would switch instruments with the guy on his left. For select performances of “You Enjoy Myself,” Gordon and Anastasio would perform synchronized maneuvers on mini-trampolines.

For Halloween, 1993, Phish began a tradition of playing an entire album from another band at a live show. The first album, selected by fans, was the Beatles’ White Album. Phish has also performed The Who’s Quadrophenia, The Velvet Underground’s Loaded and Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon.

During a tour in 1995, Phish challenged their audience to two games of chess. Each show consisted of a pair of moves. Phish and their audience split the two games.

Phish’s first two day festival, called The Clifford Ball, was held at a decommissioned Air Force base in Plattsburgh, New York. Between 70,000 and 80,000 people flocked to Phish’s own makeshift city. Organizers added an amusement park, restaurants, a post office, playgrounds, arcades, and a movie theater to the grounds. Phish rode a flatbed truck through the campground and serenaded the audience through the night and early morning.

In 1997, at the festival called the Great Went, Phish and their audience collaborated on a large work of art. At the end of the festival, the mammoth piece of art was burned to the ground.

For the Millennium Celebration, Phish had the largest paid attendance of any concert on the globe. To conclude the festival, Phish played an extended seven-and-a-half hour set that began at midnight and ended at sunrise.

In a move reminiscent of the Beatles’ final performance, Phish performed seven songs atop the Ed Sullivan Theater during The Late Show with David Letterman.

Creative, funny, inventive and downright awesome, Phish plays music the way it’s supposed to be played and the way it’s supposed to be heard… live.

Pouring a Foundation

Pouring a new foundation for an addition

When you are building an addition onto your existing home you will most likely need to pour a new foundation for the new addition.  You can also build your addition on Piers, this is OK for three season rooms or sunrooms but not recommended for year round living additions, such as bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens.  Before your contractor begins excavation he should have the area surveyed for any underground utilities. Underground gas lines, power lines, sewer lines, water supply lines, septic tanks, oil tanks are just a few of the possible obstacles your contractor may need to go around. If any of these are in the way they will need to be moved prior to excavation.                                                                                  

A typical foundation will consist of three primary parts, (1) the footing (2) the wall (3) the floor. A typical foundation is almost always poured in the three steps.

First the foundation area will need to be excavated to the desired depth. The depth will depend on the type of foundation. A full basement will require a hole to be excavated at a depth of about 8-10 feet. A crawl space will require a hole to be excavated at a depth of 3-4 feet. The footing should always be at least 42” below grade (surface of the grass) in the northeast. Your contractor should know all of your local codes. If you are adding a full basement don’t forget that your contractor will cut an opening from the existing basement to the new basement. That can get messy so make sure that all of your valuables in the existing basement are covered to be protected from excessive dust and make sure that your valuables are far away from the area where the cutting will be done. A concrete wall cutting machine is very dusty and messy.

(1)  The footings have been poured and the area under the slab and around the footings is filled with crushed stone to help with drainage so that water does not penetrate through the foundation and enter  the basement. Plastic drainage piping has been installed around the outside of the footings and covered with geofabric. A groove is carved in the top of the foundation so that the newly poured concrete for the walls will be fastened to the footing. This groove prevents the wall from sliding off of the footing when lateral pressure is applied.

(2)  The walls have now been poured.  Once the walls are poured the forms are stripped and the outside of the foundation walls get backfilled. Notice the perimeter fencing around the foundation. It is very important that your contractor always has perimeter fencing up around the foundation, especially overnight when the contractor is not there.  This is extremely important; your homeowners insurance could be liable for any injury in the case that someone falls in. A thick plastic sheeting has been placed over the crushed rock to help in preventing moisture from getting through the concrete slab and into your basement. Once the plastic is placed we are ready to pour the floor.

(3) Once the concrete floor has been poured we are ready to begin framing.  The concrete floor of your basement should be smooth and level. A good foundation contractor can do this relatively easily.

            The Details

A concrete cutting machine sometimes called a wall saw or a wet saw is usually powered using a hydraulic motor. The main hydraulic pump is usually mounted to a truck and the saw is connected using hydraulic hoses. Water is used to lubricate the blade and to control the dust. Make sure you protect the inside of the basement with a plastic sheet.

A concrete pump is needed when a cement mixer cannot access the construction site. Many times additions are built in the back of a house and there is not enough space for a large cement mixer to get around the sides of the house. Sometimes a cement mixer has enough space to get to the cosnstruction area but there is a hill that is too steep, or sometimes the cement mixer would have to drive over a septic tank to reach the construction area. If you have a septic tank make sure it is marked on you property so that no heavy equipment can drive over it. A cement mixer vegicle that is full of concrete can wieght 80,000 pounds.

Pinning the new wall to the existing involves drilling the existing foundation and driving in rebar. The rebar will act as a mechanical fastener between the new wall and the existing wall. This is a must. If your contractor doesn’t do this there is a good chance that the concrete wall will break and cave in when he is back filling. These pins keep the new wall from pushing in when there is a lot of wieght from vehicle driving around the perimeter of the foundation.  

Waterproofing the outside of a foundation wall is very important. This can be done either by rolling the water proofing on or  spraying it on. The water proofing should cover the walls, where the walls meet the footings, and especially where the walls meet existing foundation. The seam where the walls meet the existing foundation is the most crucial area to water proof. A good contractor will cover this area multiple times. That seam is the most vulnerable point where groud water can enter the basement. Waterproofing material is usually tar based or rubber based.

Drainage is the most important method to eliminating water intrusion in your new basment. A good drainage system should take any water away from the foundation. Water that’s runs off of the roof should be controlled using gutters and down spouts. The downspouts should have extensions on the groound so the rain water is not dumped directly at the base of the foundation. You can also have your contractor lay draiange piping around the foundation. Solid drainage piping can be used to collect the rainwater and discharge it far away from the house. Perforated drainage piping can be installed around the perimeter of the foundation to collect ground water and carry it away from the foundation.

Pre-Cast basement entrances are installed after the walls have been poured. The precast basement entrance can be ordered from a local concrete supply company. Usually your contractor will take care of ordering the unit. The supply company that delivers the basement entrance will also install it. It is usually craned into place where the concrete contractor has left an opening for it. It is bolted to the new foundation and waterproffed. Then the actua metal door will be installed. Most companies use Bilco doors. Don’t forget to paint them at the end of the project, the factory color is usually just a primer paint.

From Fishing Village to Party Haven

Puerto Penasco was once a quiet little fishing village but now it has become a young American weekend party haven……………..

As we drove into Puerto Penasco we couldn’t believe all the sand and the funny road signs….road runners…….turtles crossing…..racing rabbits.  From the last town on the road into Penasco is a stretch of 30 miles of sand – it’s an amazing view that reaches forward with little bushes to hold it down. Every so often you will see an individual house with some horses and cacti in the yard.

We searched the streets for a hotel with a vacancy.  It was mid week so we had plenty to choose from.  We pulled up to a small hotel with a pool in front and entered the “hotel office”.  The angry woman behind the counter, that we seemed to be interrupting, stood up to show us a room that we kindly passed on and got in the car to continue the search.  We hoped to find something bigger than an 8 x 8 room with a cramped shower stall in the tiny bathroom.   The town is made up of clusters of restaurants and small businesses with homes and a ton of sand between them.   In all my travels I have never seen so much sand. We found a hotel called Playa Inn. It had a nice lobby, friendly staff, great rooms, and the only catch – it costs US.  After the last few days we are ready to indulge.  We signed the registry, roll our bags to the room and grab a bite to eat.  After a few nights sleep and a few great meals we were ready to check out our new town. Playa Inn was by a section of town that had new development, older homes, new strip malls and a beach that was a combination of sand, sea shells, and old black lava that appeared to be rocks because the sea had smoothed them over.  We were told the lava came from the Pinacate Volcanic Field in the Sonora desert.  Not far from Playa Inn were RV parks and beautiful mansions.  In Mexico there is always contrast. It is what we love so much about it.

The streets are very wide and most are sand except the few main streets which have been paved.  There are about 35000 people – at least that is what the population sign says when you drive into town.  It was a sleepy little fishing town at one time but is now a thriving tourist town.  The fishing is still going on but the non-stop condo building, great restaurants, loud bars and open air shops you give you the feeling there is more at work here.  On Thursday nights the streets are buzzing with vehicles and many American tourists.  By Friday night the town has been over taken by Americans ready to spend money and party.  The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18 years old compared to the American neighbours age being 21 years old.  Guess where the college and university kids come to play?  Here they party all night – sleep all day – lay on the beach – rent ATV’s – eat in great restaurants and then do it all over again then next night.

We moved to Calle 13 and stayed in a hotel called Senorial Hotel; right in the heart of the action.  We struck up a deal with the owner and we stayed another 2 weeks.  Calle 13 is a street made up of bars, hotels and restaurants and was very busy on the weekends.

The Old Port – pictured above – is also close by and we started to visit there every evening for the spectacular sun sets.  When the sun goes down you can see Mount Filipe over on the other side of the Sea of Cortez.  On Sunday nights the locals gather in the Old Port and drive up and down visiting and socializing.  They play loud music and bring their families out to see each other.  A pub at the Old Port called – Agave – has their Happy Hour at 4:00 and serves great Margaritas as the sun sets. We found a table and called it our own.  Its nice when you have been into an establishment a few times and they get to know you.

We mostly drank only at Happy Hour at any of the bars and we also went to the local grocery store – Super Ley. We bought groceries and took them back to our room and cooked for ourselves.  We had chicken breasts for . per kg and and pineapple, advacados, onions, tomatoes, and pastery treats, all for very little.  We would always leave the Super Ley with 3 or 4 bags of groceries and be amazed it only cost us -15. And that depended on if we had some Tequila or Kahlua.  Tequila will run you from . – 80 and Kahlua was about .  Most of our meals were .00 each and we found one great place that served you a whole grilled chicken, coleslaw and flour wraps for . – we devoured a couple of those!!

The town is growing and most of the land is still for sale.  You can purchase land and build, or buy a condo, trailer, rustic cement home or even an 1/8 ownership of a home on a championship golf course.  All in all Puerto Penasco is a great place for a two week vacation or a weekend getaway.

The White Desert of Egypt, it’s worth the Trip

The Pyramids of Giza, The Luxor Temple, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings, all of these attractions are at the top of everyone’s must see list in Egypt, but very few manage to find the time to hop in a 4X4 jeep and discover the remote destination of The White Desert.

For one thing a trip to the center of the country must be far too expensive, time consuming and difficult to plan. However, a 3-day trip from the Dahab Hostel in Downtown Cairo can be booked for a bargain price of 450e () per person for 2 nights and 3 days. The trip includes all meals and transfers a visit to the hot springs, a 4X4 ride in the sand dunes that you won’t soon forget and an extraordinary night camping Bedouin style in the White Desert.

A five-hour coach ride takes you from Cairo’s downtown bus station to the small town of Bahariya, the jumping off point for safaris into the desert in Egypt’s interior. The scenery is spectacular. Vast rolling dunes disappear into the clear blue sky for as far as they eye
can see.

By mid-afternoon, the coach arrives at the guest-house where travelers are fed a traditional Bedouin meal of red sauce and potato, with rice, pita and sweet tea. Delicious. Not a lot of time to settle in though, because within the hour, you are back on the road to head to the main attraction.

Make sure to buy a traditional headscarf before leaving the compound to keep the sand out of your face and for added warmth at night, because the next 2 days are filled with extreme climates that will surprise even the most seasoned traveler.

Hopping into the back of a 4X4 jeep, gives a real sense of adventure. Bumping along the road in the intense heat surrounded by sand makes you fell as though you are in an Indiana Jones Movie.

It is not long until you enter The Black Desert, a nice prelude to the forthcoming White Desert. Climbing a high peak you will overlook an amazing desert vista. Black pebbles caused by erosion blowing in from the mountains cover the entire land, turning it to an ominous dark shade.

Making sure to keep with the feeling that you are truly traveling off of the beaten path, you will pass through a couple of security check points with armed guards and road blocks. The thrill is worth it because the instant you are allowed through check point number two, the terrain instantly turns to a white landscape that looked as if a blanket of snow has just fallen on the ground.

White monoliths jut out of the sand and become larger and more impressive until you reach your final destination. A campsite surrounded by the most amazing rock formations seen on this planet. Giant pure white sculptures resembling mushrooms, camels and hawks scatter the landscape. Made of chalk, these works of art are formed by wind and erosion. Solid enough to walk upon, yet so fragile that they can flake off with the stroke of a hand.

Bedouin guides prepare the camp putting up traditional walls made of thick material. They cover the ground with woolen blankets and start a fire to keep you warm. Three colorful walls surround the camp to block the wind with the front open to the fire. The shelter remains roofless to reveal the starry sky and everyone huddles together to settle in for a thrilling evening in the middle of the Sahara Desert.

Day two starts with a hearty breakfast and then it is back to Bahariya for an unforgettable 4X4 adventure through steep dunes. The ride is long and full of excitement as people are tossed about hitting heads on the roof, but laughing through the entire drive. The hot springs are a welcome change to the high-energy thrill ride.

The day ends with a hike up to a high plateau for one final look at the desert landscape and to take in that final view of the mythical Sahara Desert. It may not be the most popular trip on an Egyptian itinerary, but it is certainly the most thriling and spectacular, giving unique memories that will rival any adventure that you will experience in your life.
